Women's Rights around the world

  • Nov. 30th, 2008 at 9:20 AM

Since doing research for a research project in college, I've been drawn to women's rights issues in the third world.    The basic right to education, the right to vote, the right to birth control.  The right to not endure female circumcision as a teenager.  The right to not be sold into slavery by family members.  Little stuff like that.

Nicholas Kristof's column in the NY Times often provides information about this subject that one would never hear anything about.  He was the first to highlight the genocide in Darfur, and wrote a series of articles about girls being sold into prostitution in Asia, among many other things.  His column today has solidified my desire to be part of something bigger - to help women gain empowerment and make sure girls get the education they want and need.  I was horrified to read about the seemingly commonplace action of men against women - throwing acid on them to punish them.  This is the 21st century people, in somewhat modern societies.  And the police don't do anything about it because it's just women.  I'm still drying the tears.

my fortune

  • Nov. 23rd, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Ooo!  My fortune cookie today said:   "You have a rmarkable power which you are not using."

I wanna be Jean Grey :)

Yesterday I saw Quantum of Solace.  I enjoyed it as much as Casino Royale.  No glovebox defibrillator, though :)  And with a name as cool as that, how could it be bad?  There was so much cool technology in the movie.  The computers at MI5, the hydrogen fuel cell hotel in the Bolivian desert, and the Ford Edge fuel cell cars are what I remember mainly.  And talk of green issues - never mind that it was the bad guy spouting crap, at least the issues were discussed.  I think that's just awesome to get the exposure for environmental issues.  Daniel Craig is not what you'd call a pretty face, but my god, the man is sexy.  And bold.  I think that's what I love about the style of action in these new Bond movies, as well as the Bourne movies - the boldness of the action.  There's no hesitation "can I make that jump to keep chasing the guy?"  It's just go, go, go!  And it was very cool to see the trust building between M and 007.  When it came down to it, M trusted in Bond, and she wasn't disappointed.  And good grief, that man fills out a tux well.  The fashions in the movie were vere 70-esque.  I wonder if tight pants are on the way back in..  my mom called them "slim jims".  LOL

Today I went and visited my sis.  It was nice to see her, but I keep hoping she'll grow up one of these days and quit her... um, bad habits.  Probably won't happen.  I don't know how to help her, other than being there for her and trying to be a good influence.  With no kids, I guess she doesn't have any big reason to make changes in her life.  Hmm.

Getting ready to hit the road back towards St Louis, as soon as the kids get back from their Thanksgiving with their dad's family.  Their great grandparents are bringing them back; it was really nice to see them again this morning.  I do miss the ex- family.   It was a nice day today, though, visiting and quiet time:)  It was a good weekend:)

Thanks for reading:)

Some quick thoughts before I go to sleep:
  • Ruby didn't go behind their backs!  Yay. Poor poor Ruby on the rack:(  That's a taste of Hell, I suppose...
  • Anna's a fallen angel, that's awesome.  It was like finding out Mary's a hunter.  Duh
  • Dean and Anna:)  Dean and Bad Co.  Wasn't it BC in R66?
  • Angels take God's existence on faith.  YES.
  • Jensen.  Crying.  *SOB*  most beautiful man on earth
  • So, Anna got her groove back AND her grace back :)

posted this in TVG also, same thing

Oh Holy Freekin' Crap!!!

Demons want Anna alive but Angels want her dead?  How's that for irony.

And bumped up boys.  Holy CRAP.

And Dean gets some next week!  *shrieking noiselessly*

I meant to post this before, but I had two theories (despite my last entry, this was after that, after a friend reminded me of the big question):  one, that Sam met Ruby's new host before Ruby was in her and they had a thing, then Ruby came with the girl's permission for some reason, or two, that Ruby possessed a dying person.  Thank goodness.

Will it be good enough for the crazy fangirls?  Who cares, it's good enough for me.  Buncha nuts they are, anyway.

Holy Cow! Minor spoiler below...

From EW's Ask Ausiello:

Question: Supernatural has been off the charts amazing this season! But, you've been very general with your spoilers. Any chance you can give your favorite readers some concrete stuff? -- Dianne
Ausiello:
One of the of the Winchester brothers will partake in a shirtless (and presumably pantsless) sex scene before the end of November sweeps. Even more shocking than that? The deed is done at a location Supe fans hold sacred. Concrete enough for you?

Oo Oo Oo!  which one will it be?  I think it's Dean's turn... but we'll see :)  And the location?  I have my superstition if it is Dean...

Is there an ep on Thanksgiving?  If not, then this scene will have to be either tomorrow or next week, right?  Yay!

got away just in time...

Once again, I find I am glad to be free.  I found out tonight that the ID10tX has again gotten in trouble with the law and again slithered out somehow.

My (ex) sis-in-law tells me that he was driving to Iowa to meet up with some chick he met online.  Just over the Iowa border, he got pulled over - and of course arrested - for... wait for it...  DWI, open container, paraphenelia, and of course possession.  Oh, and a broken headlight.  But the Ioweejans must not have access to a little thing called the World Wide Web, since they didn't find out he has warrents out in Missouri.  And then his mother bailed him out.  So as long as he never gets caught in Iowa again, he's probably in the clear.  Poor Iowa girl signed his bond note though...  silly girl.  Moron.

the trouble with viruses...

  • Oct. 28th, 2008 at 9:26 PM
So, I found out that my nephew had - weirdly enough - a virus in his hip joint.  Like with other viral infections, it cleared on its own.  The doctors think it traveled to his hip from a head cold the week before.  Betcha didn't know you could get a cold in your hip, didya?

Well, that's not the only weird connection I've had with a virus.  A virus is what caused Jesse's retardation.  At 10 months, he had a stomach flu, and a week later the virus moved to his brain and caused massive swelling. The swelling is what caused the brain damage.  That was 15 years ago - actually 16 years minus a month or so.

Interesting what the little bugs can do.

didn't get a damn thing done...

  • Oct. 26th, 2008 at 10:14 PM
what a good, relaxing weekend.  Got some reading done, some cleaning done, a lot of cooking done.  I'm ready to go back to work tomorrow!

Josh and I watched Good Will Hunting today.  I had forgotten how good that movie is, how amazing Robin Williams was in that time period.  I think I'm gonna get Dead Poet's Society for us to watch next.  Carpe Diem!

Looking forward to my tasks tomorrow at work, then working out tomorrow night, then Jesse's swimming Tuesday, then Wednesday - yes!  no class!  :)  Don't have my grade yet, but it should be at least a high B if not A.  Whatever.

That's all I've got tonight.  Good night, my friends:)
I did the re-watch - after I'd read Kripke's info - and here's my blog:

What a beautiful day it is!!!

a good day, all in all

  • Oct. 25th, 2008 at 12:38 AM
long day at work today, but good.  then jesse had a Halloween party tonight and had a really good time, and I went to a Tastefully Simple party at my neighbor's.  Restrained myself and only bought 3 things :)  YUM.

Looks like my nephew, who's been in the children's hospital since Wed, may have some kind of spot on his spine causing his muscle loss.  They're not sure what that means or what to do about it, but at least they're coming up with some kind of answer.  Not looking like MD after all.

Looking forward to a quiet weekend at home!  Cleaning, Cooking and Reading.  Maybe some swimming thrown in, too :)

Did good with my goal, but is avoiding the bad thoughts the same as not having them?  A step in the right direction?

not much to say tonight...  quiet evening of Fringe and Supernatural... with 1/2 of Smallville in between.  But no homework:)

No write-up of SN tonight, didn't take notes, and wasn't that impressed.  Except for the performances, of course.  I thought the MOTW was a little sketchy.  I thought they couldn't decide whether they wanted it to be funny or scary or angsty.  And they CAN do that well (Mystery Spot, etc), but it didn't work so good for me tonight.  Maybe I'll write a blog later - obviously I do have thoughts trying to escape... :)

I worked on today's goal today, mainly by being really busy at work.  I'm gonna keep at that same goal tomorrow while trying to keep in mind my place in the world, and my place in my own bubble.  My current place anyway.

Good night, I leave you with (hopefully) a link to the first MBV3D trailer:

if it's not raining, it's pouring...

  • Oct. 23rd, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I had been having a feeling the last few days that I should call my (ex) sister-in-law.  I haven't talked with her for a while, and it just felt like I needed to.  So, this morning on the way to work I did.  Turns out their youngest son, who's about 6-7 (I forget...) may have Muscular Dystrophy.  He had some tests yesterday and is going in for some more today.  The doctors thought they would probably know by the end of the day today.  Wow.  I'm glad I called, because the rest of the family over there (across the state, 300 miles away) are basically crazy - no support for them.  Not that I'm much help, being 300 miles away, but I'm glad I called anyway.  This family I married into (and divorced out of) seems like it has more than its share of "life challenges", but I guess that's just how it goes.  I'll be thinking good thoughts and projecting hugs to Linda and Jason and Ean today.  If I were a praying person I'd be doing that too.
Even a monkey could do it...

Check out the monkey's cute overalls and helmet :)

Took my final tonight on my first master's class.  Not overly challening - if you put in the time to make your note sheet.  The whole class wasn't really all that challenging, but we had some good discussions, and I did learn some.  I've heard tell that the hardest part of a master's degree is getting in. Once you're in, the classes aren't any harder than undergrad.  But I suspect that's only true on the non-technical classes... which is why I'n not getting another engineering degree!

The stuff I learned in the class is actually coming in handy, since I've been assigned my first program to lead.  I saw my old boss in the hall today, and he asked how I was doing, and I kinda made a face, and he said "who's got your goat now?"  I was like, nobody!  Is that how I am at work?  Always after someone, or criticizing someone?  I don't think so, but I'd better watch that.  It's probably just that I only come over to talk to him when I want to bitch about something:)  I'd better remedy that too:)

I'm gonna try for the daily journal entry; first step in working on my organization skills.   I'll add in the daily to-do list for the next day in a bit.  So today I was much less depressed and lonely than yesterday.  I think it was exercising last night, it makes a big difference.  We are just a big bundle of chemical reactions, and when we don't keep tuned our performance suffers. *geekout*

I had a drink after class with a friend.  That was fun, I need to do it more often.

Goal for tomorrow:
I promise not to dwell on little things that I've overanalyzed to death making myself crazy.

New Supernatural tomorrow!!!!!  WAHOO!!!!

another SN blog I love

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Other than GS's, this is the only other blog I make sure to read every week.  It always puts the story into perspective in a logical and entertaining way:)

(whoops, copy paste error and now TVG isn't coorperating again...  the blog name is Critical Myth.  I'll post the link as soon as I can get it)

Episode 4.04 on TVGuide

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Seems that the blogs on TVGuide are working again - looks like they reverted back to the old format.  Anyway, my blog is now posted there also (same one that's posted here):
http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/Eaglegirl/Review-Supernatural-404/800048246

TVGuide seems to be all frelled up today, so I'll just post the review here.

I of course really enjoyed the episode, watching the boys, fighting together, arguing together, some secrets coming out, some still hidden. But I wasn’t real impressed with the MOTW. Which is OK.

I’m still not impressed with NuRu – the character or the actress. She’s just blah. First, the character does just follow Sam around, it seems like, not saying much, and the actress seems like a little girl trying to play in the grown-ups game. And speaking of Ruby, I got the impression that she was taking off after she heard about Castiel. I guess not, huh. Not that I don’t like Ruby – that’s far from the truth. I think the character adds a cool complexity to our Good vs Evil story. I’m still really interested to know why Ruby is how she is. Just – someone please give the girl an acting lesson or something. Maybe she’ll get warmed up in the role

I’m really conflicted about the mythology. I keep thinking back to Sin City and the girl-demon telling Dean that Lucifer was a myth to demons, and only some chose to “believe” in him. We don’t know what Ruby’s motivation is, why she’s not “bad”, if that is in fact the case. We know Castiel says that God has a plan for Dean. We also know that angels “smite first and ask questions later”. Just because Lilith thinks she’s going to release Lucifer by breaking the 66 seals – does that make it fact, or is she just believing in the mythology alluded to in Sin City. I don’t know quite what I’m thinking here, but I’m just not convinced that it’s gonna come down to a simple God vs Devil, and therefore Dean vs Sam, scenario.

I thought Dean was really harsh with Sam. I mean, Sam has a point – he IS saving people. I don’t understand (yet) why Castiel has such a problem with Sam sending demons back to Hell. Or is it that he’s working with Ruby? Or is Sam doing something we don’t know about? I liked Sam telling Dean that he was trying to take the curse and make something good of it.

So, thinking about whether Jack gonna munch on Dean makes me wonder if Dean is any different; can die? And also, last season (and now still), the big question was – Did Sam come back the same? And where was Sam while he was gone, why doesn’t he remember anything – flashes like Dean? Did Dean come back the same? I’m just waiting to see if there’ll be anything along those lines.

OH, Travis unwittingly perpetuated the cycle. If he’d left well enough alone, maybe he could have fought it. But then, Sam didn’t give Madison a chance to try to fight it.

Best line of the night is from Sam – “It doesn’t matter what you are, it only matters what you do. You have a choice.” Yeah, I’m with you, Sam! Now if only Dean would see it that way – or get some more info from Castiel about what the problem is. And on that – Dean seemed to just jump right into the “God doesn’t want you doing it” to Sam.

I’m glad that Dean apologized to Sam for being so harsh, and that, as usual, he’s honest with Sam and that he’s just scared.

This was definitely my favorite episode; I found it a little inconsistent with how they treated Madison in Heart when I watched the first time through, but whatever. Thinking about that now, after a second watch, I’m not sure why I felt that so strongly last night – but I do remember thinking at the end of Heart that they didn’t even try to work something out, ala cell in the basement for the full moon times or something. But with Jack, they’re willing to let him try to fight.

As usual, thanks for reading, and see you next week!

Supernatural Episode #4.02 Review

  • Sep. 26th, 2008 at 11:33 PM

Well, I"ve posted my review for Episode two - that's two weeks in a row.  Is that a pattern forming?
http://community.tvguide.com/blog/Eaglegirl/800000490
